PodcastThe Mission of Museums in the 21st Century - A Personal View

Here’s what he said:

It is important to consider the idea of art as being a form of generosity through which we can learn and as a portal through which exchange is created.

Art can help us unlearn and relearn our patterns of thinking and storytelling, so that we enter in communion with our environment, as opposed to a dominating colonialist separation from the environment.

I think that museums are not only about pointing out urgencies but also about finding agency to respond to these urgencies.

Museums and institutions should serve art and artists and enable their work. Institutions can be like living organisms: never accepting the status quo and staying open to change.

At stake in the “war on woke” is the long-held convention of government non-interference in art and heritage matters which is of fundamental importance for the independence of art institutions.

I believe that urgent and overdue shifts are beginning to take place. Artists who long did not get the attention and recognition they deserve are finally getting that attention and recognition.

It’s more important than ever to connect art and society so that art is interwoven with the very stuff and texture of human experience.
