In the long term, institutions, understood as the rules of the economic game, determine the success and failure of societies.
The ideals of the American founding are very powerful and have set the country for success. […] I’m very concerned that these drivers of success are now being eroded at a pace that I have not seen in my lifetime.
You see a world that is far more fluid than in the Cold War era and where any coalitions that emerge are more kind of ad hoc and changing.
It is very important, when we think about geostrategic competition, to be able to step back and not exaggerate the strength of our adversaries.
The way to address the problem [of economic interdependence] is by forging deeper partnerships with other countries, creating redundancy and making sure that you always have alternatives.
There are still many assets, many sources of strength for the Western Alliance, for the United States. The question is whether we are good stewards of that power and strengths.
